image of an entrepreneur avoiding a maze with a bridgeDid you know that some of the most powerful entrepreneurial ideas in the lexicon of human knowledge arose from the ashes of economic catastrophe? It’s true. And the reason is a lot simpler than you think: when times get tough, unemployment increases. So what do people do? They become entrepreneurs.

If you’re thinking about starting a business — or even keeping one afloat in this economy — don’t be discouraged by the climate. If anything, find inspiration in the fact that — no matter what happens — things will turn around eventually. Read More…

How To Remove Hidden Encrypted Code from WordPress Footer

wordpress, header, encryption, advertisement, ad, free theme, footer, spyware

Chances are, if you’re using WordPress, you will download a free WordPress theme (at one point or another), with which you will design your blog or site. One of the best things about WordPress is the sheer magnitude of themes available — offering you a seemingly infinite number of theme choices and combinations. One column, two columns, or three columns? Black background, white background, or something in between? You decide — and it’s this flexibility that helps WordPress stand head and shoulders above its competition.

Unfortunately, if you choose to use a free WordPress theme, you will likely encounter one in which the author encrypts code in the theme itself, linking away from your site to another page — from which he or she can generate revenue. Theme writers have to make a living too, so it’s somewhat understandable — but there’s no law that says you have to keep the links. Read More…

Wordpress Plugin: Dropdown Navigation Bar in Admin Control Panel

WordPress is by far the best content management system out there — and I’ve tried them all. But for all its functionality and scalability, the control panel is still difficult to navigate. I find myself having to click, and re-click, and re-re-click menu items constantly. It really slows things down and stifles creativity to a certain degree. So I’m always looking for new plugins and shortcuts that will simplify the process of getting around my blogs.

Today was a very good day… Read More…

Linking Social Media Sites — Careful What You Share!

This is a short tip I’m going to give you after many years of navigating social media sites toward the objective of search engine optimization, sales, marketing, and just making friends. These days, there is a seemingly endless supply of social networking hubs, re-posters, re-tweeters, aggregators, and mass-mailers (or mass-populators). And the latest fad seems to be linking these services together, so that whatever you post on one, might be instantly and automatically re-posted on any number of other sites. Read More…

Wordpress Tip: Adding Space in Your Sidebar

What’s the golden rule of Web 2.0? WHITE SPACE! Gone are the days of flashing banners and density of text. Here come the days of freedom and wide-open spaces. And that brings me to today’s topic.

When I first starting working in Wordpress, I had a hard time figuring out how to space my sidebar correctly. Everything seemed squished together, but I couldn’t figure out how to create space between widgets.

Over time, I have figured out how to create such space in more technical and un-user-friendly ways, but we will save such discussions for another day. For now, I’m going to give you this quick work-around that should help even the newest newbie get some much needed white space in his or her  sidebar. Read More…

Borrowing Ideas from the Web and Incoporating Them Into Your Own Web Design

Here’s a question I hear all the time: “When I see a website I like, how do I take the idea and use it for my own site?”

Well the short answer is, you don’t — at least without permission. Most websites and designs are copyrighted, so you need to be really careful about how you approach this subject. Before you go stealing someone else’s website, you might want to ask permission.

Having said that, it’s a lot easier to borrow content from the web than most people think. Read More…
