This article is a very rudimentary and simple comparison of the practicality and user-friendliness of the Apple Macintosh operating system, versus the Windows operating system. Some of you experts will find it annoyingly obvious, but I wrote it for users who are on-the-fence, as it were, and who might not understand the complexities the way more expert users do. If you’re using Windows or Mac, and you are thinking about switching teams, but you don’t know a whole lot more about computers than how to turn them on, create a Word document, surf the web, or send an email, then this post might be just the article for you. I just saw the word “BLOGROLL” in all caps on somebody’s site, and it really freaked me out. It looks like the name of some goddamn Lord of the Rings creature what eats hobbits or dwarves. Or whatever.
That’s not what it is. And I know you know that. A blogroll is nothing more than a list of websites or blogs you add to your own site that have some similarity to what you’re doing. The blogroll serves several purposes: Read More…
A few days ago, I got an email from a subscriber to my financial/economic blog, BottomViolation.com, saying “Your images aren’t appearing in your RSS feed. Respectfully, it doesn’t make you look very professional.”
And he was right. Read More…
I’m by no means the fastest or smartest web developer in the planet, but I’ve been doing this for a long time, and I have enough experience to know that — as with any vocation, sport, or project — recognizing which tools to use, and when to use them, can make the difference between a mediocre result and an excellent one.
For a long time, I did almost all my basic web-development and editing in Dreamweaver, but I found myself using only a fraction of the features. And those features make the user-interface cumbersome and unwieldy. I should take a moment here to say this: despite the fact I’ve been using Dreamweaver for a long time, I’m sure there are shortcuts and tricks I still don’t know about, so if I say something in this article that has an obvious and easy work-around I have somehow missed, I strongly urge you to enlighten me. As many of you may have noticed, MyTechTool.com has changed its CMS from vBulletin to SimpleMachines. I have a lot of reasons for doing this; over the last year, I’ve had a lot of problems with vBulletin. I’m gong to highlight the most glaring for you today, however — for those of you who are trying to make a decision for the content management on your site.
- Let’s begin with the fact that vBulleting costs (a lot) of money, whereas SimpleMachines is free. And what exactly are you paying for with vBulletin? Well, that brings me to my next point:
- vBulletin is just WAAAAAAAY too much CMS for me. In fact, I don’t really understand what their niche is. I mean, if you’re a small-time blogger, then you have absolutely no use for the gargantuous vBulletin. And if you’re IBM, you either get something way more sophisticated, or else you just create it in-house. I really don’t get it. Did I say that already? Read More…
A few months ago, my ex got angry with me and dropped my Mac on the ground. It had the intended effect, destroying the monitor, and causing me no end of distress. I kept my cool, however, and took it to the Apple Store down the road, where they promptly told me that the cost of repair would be over $1100. And to which I promptly left the store, chagrined.
Not to be discouraged or dissuaded by my ex’s immaturity — nor the Apple Store’s highway robber — I came home, went to E-bay, and found a screen online for about $150. Read More…
